ADVENTURE, May 1917

The pulp-magazine industry as a whole held the Ridgway Company’s Adventure in extremely high regard, and practically every writer in the field hoped to crack its pages and become a member of editor Arthur Sullivant Hoffman’s cherished Writers Brigade. The May 1917 number shows Adventure at the beginning of its peak period, loosely defined as 1917 to 1927, when Hoffman relinquished the editor’s chair. Its contributors include such regulars as H. Rider Haggard, Talbot Mundy, J. Allan Dunn, W.C. Tuttle, Captain A. E. Dingle, and the team of Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur. A smashing issue with cover by Sidney Riesenberg. Note: 1917 and 1918 issues are particularly scarce for two reasons: (1) many were shipped overseas to Americans serving in the AEF during World War I, and (2) many more were destroyed during the 1918-19 influenza epidemic, during which it was believed that old magazines carried flu germs. Condition: Very Good Plus. There’s some closed tears to the front cover’s longer-than-usual overhang (see scan), but overall this is a clean, tight, bright copy. There’s also a half-inch chip out of the spine heel. The first page (Contents) has a tear about halfway down but is all there.
