FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES, Sept-Oct. 1939, first issue

One of a flock of new pulps introduced by the Munsey Company to bolster its market share in a highly competitive environment, Famous Fantastic Mysteries drew on decades of speculative-fiction reprints from the company’s early pulps, among them Argosy and All-Story. Catering to readers with long memories as well as those relatively new to SF and fantasy fiction, editor Mary Gnaedinger did a great job of plucking stories from the Teens and Twenties and repackaging them for consumption by eager fans. This first issue’s contents are visible on the front cover and include some real classics (and, to be honest, one or two stiffs). Condition: Near Fine. Back cover has a nasty crease and a browning top edge; otherwise this is a pretty nice copy. Spine is complete and white. Text block is cream to lightly yellowed and supple. Overall nice copy of this key issue.
