UNKNOWN, August 1941, L. Ron Hubbard, Henry Kuttner

This issue of John W. Campbell’s fantasy-fiction pulp contains one of L. Ron Hubbard’s little-discussed yarns, “The Case of the Friendly Corpse,” a whimsical story about a reluctant necromancer. Also contains a beaut of a tale by Henry Kuttner, “The Devil We Know.”

Condition: Good/Very Good. We could just as easily call it Good Plus or Very Good Minus. It’s substantially sound and readable but definitely not in collector’s grade. Both covers’ spine hinges are rubbed (but no paper loss) and there’s a nasty closed tear on the front cover (see scan). Back cover has small chips out of top edge and bottom right corner near spine. Circled “8” on front cover in partially erased grease pencil. Text block is yellowed with tanning toward the edges (but no brittleness or chipping). In short, a good reader’s copy or starter copy for those trying to put a run together.
