THE MASK OF FU MANCHU, Sax Rohmer, first edition in facsimile wrapper
New York: Doubleday Crime Club, 1932. First edition (stated). What might be the very best Fu Manchu novel is also a beautiful book: it sports several beautifully executed black-and-white illustrations (including on the endpapers) by the great John Richard Flanagan, who illustrated Rohmer’s stories when they were serialized in Collier’s Magazine prior to hardcover publication. This marked a very rare departure for the Crime Club, which didn’t generally include illos in their books. (They made an exception for a series of novels whose detective was a police sketch artist.) The book is also in demand because it was made into a memorable M-G-M film starring Boris Karloff as Rohmer’s Devil Doctor and Myrna Loy as his daughter Fah Lo Suee. Condition: Very Good in As New facsimile dust jacket. Square, tight copy, lightly bumped bottom corners. The book’s yellow cloth is soiled and the spine is slightly darkened. However, the text block is in extremely nice shape and has white paper. There’s a previous owner’s bookplate on the inside pastedown. A solid copy of a must-desired book that often sells for several hundred dollars even in mediocre condition.
