DESERT GOLD, Zane Grey, high-grade G&D reprint, mid 1930s

Grosset & Dunlap, mid-1930s reprint of 1913 Harper & Bros. first edition. Cloth in DJ. Desert Gold, like many of Grey’s early Western novels, first saw print in a pulp before being issued in hard covers by Harper. This G&D reprint uses the first edition’s dust-jacket art. And this copy is absolutely stunning: if not the best condition G&D that I’ve ever seen from the period, it’s certainly equal to the best. Clean and tight and spotless. The cloth (with pictorial front cover) still retains its original sheen. The text block is dazzlingly white and the topstain (maroon-colored) is vivid. The jacket has very minor chipping on the front panel’s top right edge (se scan) but otherwise is remarkably clean. I’m calling this Fine in Fine Minus jacket, but the book itself is practically As New. Condition-conscious collectors, this is a great item for you.
