New York: American Mercury, 1943. First edition thus, in wraps. Signed by Siodmak on title page. The author’s best-known work, this mystery-horror yarn was serialized in Black Mask prior to hardcover publication by Knopf. Lawrence Spivak’s Mercury Mystery digest series gave the yarn its first paperbound publication; mass-market paperback editions followed some years later. Condition: Very Good Plus. Minor edgewear to front cover (see scan), with slight rubbing to spine edges. Back cover clean and unmarked. Text block is off-white to very lightly yellowed, slightly darker along top edge. Overall a pretty nice copy of this edition, rare with author’s signature.
