AVON FANTASY READER #2, 1947, high grade

Editor Donald A. Wollheim considered this digest-sized title an anthology series rather than a magazine. Whatever it was, Avon Fantasy Reader specialized in reprinting great stories from the pulps (and, occasionaly, from slicks and hardcover books). The second volume’s highlights include Robert E. Howard’s “The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune” (a King Kull yarn from a 1929 Weird Tales), Guy Endore’s “The Day of the Dragon” (from a 1934 issue of Blue Book), Fletcher Pratt and Laurence Manning’s “City of the Living Dead” (from a 1030 Science Wonder Stories), and Robert W. Chambers’ “The Yellow Sign” (from The King in Yellow), among others. An outstanding entry from an outstanding series.
