ASTOUNDING SF, October 1940, “Slan,” “Farewell to the Master”
A truly classic issue from the Golden Age of this influential title, the gold standard in pulp science fiction. Featuring the first installment of A. E. van Vogt’s legendary mutant novel “Slan,” and the Harry Bates short story “Farewell to the Master,” which inspired the classic film The Day the Earth Stood Still. Cover by the great Hubert Rogers. Condition: Tough to say. It should grade Fine but has been exposed to water, resulting in damp stain along top edge of front and back covers. There’s also some moisture bloat, which prevents the magazine from laying flat. The text block is lightly yellowed but supple, with slight tanning along top edge. Still a decent collectable copy of a highly coveted issue.
