SNARL OF THE BEAST, Carroll John Daly, 1st Race Williams novel

New York: Edward J. Clode, Inc., 1927.  First edition. Octavo, green cloth. A historically important tale, Snarl of the Beast (originally serialized in Black Mask) was Daly’s first novel featuring his groundbreaking private eye Race Williams — and, therefore, the first hardboiled detective novel. In other words, this is the seminal work in an influential sub-genre. Whether you collect pulp fiction, crime fiction, or modern American fiction, Snarl of the Beast is a landmark title. This Very Good Plus copy has a bit of minor scuffing and small stains on the green cloth, which of course is protected by a brand-new facsimile dust jacket in Brodart protective sleeve. The only major flaw is a large corner piece torn out of page 315/316. Bear in mind, however, that this is an incredibly tough first edition to find in any condition.
